UNICEF Fundraiser, Library visit and RSPCA

It has been another busy week. Lots of the children have been discussing the events in Europe, so we started the week by discussing what we could do as a school to support the people of the Ukraine. The children wanted to raise money to help people having to leave their homes. We decided to hold a yellow and blue day and have a cake sale. So far, we have raised over £400, which is fantastic. Thank you to everyone who has donated. You can still donate on Parent Pay, if you haven't had a chance.

We had two visitors this week, on Tuesday the RSPCA visited Jays and Eagles to talk about animal welfare and the work the charity do. We had a fundraiser planned for before half term but had to cancel because of the storm, we will look to re arrange this in the near future. Little Foresters had a visitor from the library service who came to share a book with them. At the same time year 6 selected 50 new books from the library fan to add to the library. It is always exciting to get new books in school.

Update

Shrove Tuesday, World Book Day and St Piran's Day

It has certainly been a busy, first week back with activities on every day. We started the week by visiting the church and the parishioners spoke to the children about Shrove Tuesday and made pancakes for us to eat. It is lovely to be invited in to the church and learn about special days together.

On Wednesday, our plan was to read together in the forest with a treat of hot chocolate and biscuits, but the weather was not on our side. So, we decided to do it inside. Eagle class paired up with younger children across the school to share books together. It has been a long time since we have had the chance to do this and the children loved it. They have requested we do it again soon!

Thursday was World Book day and everyone came to school in costumes to go with their favourite books. There were some fabulous costumes (especially Mrs Harper!). We took the time to talk about reading and we relaunched our Reading karate system to encourage more reading in our free time. We also held a book swap, where people donated books and could select a new book to take home. Everyone had the opportunity to select a new book to try.

Finally, on Friday, it was the St Piran's Day parade in Bodmin. It has been two years since it was last held and it was exciting to be able to take part again. We took our singing group to take part in the parade and sing in the church. They were rewarded for their hard work with a pasty!

Also on Friday key stage 2 had their first cross country race for a long time. It wasn't the nicest weather, but they were excited to give it a go. They have missed the chance of taking part in competitive sports with other schools and have been excited to have a go at any competitions that they can this year. They did great!! Some of them have qualified for the next round.

Update!

Anti-bullying, Children in Need and Shoe box appeal

We started the week in odd socks to mark the beginning of anti-bullying week. We spent the week discussing what what bullying looks like and what to do to stop it. The theme was 'One Kind Word' so we looked at our language and selecting kind words to say. It worked nicely with our kind box - every week children can nominate people in the kind box to win a prize on Fridays.

Friday was children in need it was great to have our first cake sale in a long time! Everyone wore Pyjama and we had great fun raising money - the total is now over £80.

School council wanted to make Christmas shoe boxes for the Samaritans Purse. They were thrilled with the number of boxes they received and these have now been sent off to children who will be very excited to see what is inside.

Sports day

Jays and Eagles had their Sports day on Thursday. The whole day was dedicated to sport. In the morning we participated in the field events including - throwing, long jump, speed bounce, shuttle shuffle and bean bag boogie. We collected all the scores for each team. We also recorded these scores as part of the Bridge School's games.

In the afternoon we participated in the races including - obstacle, sprint, egg and spoon, three-legged, relay and long distance. Everyone showed amazing sportsmanship and supported everyone who was taking part. It was lovely to see lots of friends and family coming to watch and support. Thank you to the PTA for supplying the refreshments!!

The Carylon team were victorious with a grand total of 888 points!

New Term

Welcome Back

We are two weeks in and there has been lots of activity in all of the classes. new pupils to the school have settled in and are enjoying time at school. We have started our new units of work and trying to answer all the questions we have.

All classes have spent time out in the forest to support the work that is happening in the classroom. The teachers have been very excited to get out and explore in the fresh air.

Mrs Harper is setting up a community library trolley to have out in the playground at the end of the day. It will give you the chance to choose a book with your child to read at home. We have lots of books to browse and we will rotate them regularly. We also have a shelf of books for adults. Please feel free to add any books to the shelf that you have at home for others to enjoy!

Summer Performance

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Today was our performance day! After a month of rehearsals, a 30 page script and 8 songs, we finally had a chance to share our hard work. We performed in our forest area and it was a beautiful sunny day. Well done to all the children, you were fantastic. Thank you to the PTA for organising the raffle and raising over £1000, this is incredible! It was lovely to see everyone and I hope we can do it more in the next academic year.

Monday 14th June

Sports Day

We missed sports day last year, so we were particularly excited to compete this year. Sports day took a different format to usual. During the day each class went out to compete in a range of events/ activities to earn points for our house teams - Carlyon, Crinnis and Polkerris. It was lovely to see children supporting each other, encouraging each other and supporting those who found things difficult. It was a close competition, but Carylon finished on top! It was really lovely to gather together at the end of the day for the results as we haven't been able to be together very much this year.

It was definitely different to usual and we missed the parent chanting and cheering, but we hope that will be back next year!

To see pictures for each class please look at the class pages (they are already there or will be there this week!)

Special visit

The lambs join the forest school!

Mrs Turner brought in her lambs for us to see in forest school. We learnt about life cycles and what these animals need to grow. They were very tame and enjoyed all the attention from the children. They liked walking around on their leads and visiting children in their dens.

Forest school is one of the children's favourite times of the week. We haven't been very lucky with the weather recently, so we have started to the use the shelter the that the PTA kindly purchased for us after the Christmas raffle. It allows us to continue with forest school whilst the rain is pouring down!

Mental Health Awareness week

Looking after ourselves

This week was mental health awareness week. We had a delivery of some new books (some pictured) which have kindly be donated to schools. These books feature a variety of characters and introduce a number of mental health themes. I'm sure the children will enjoy exploring these new stories.

We also spoke about how to manage small and big feelings and came up with a list to help us when we are not feeling ok. Lots of the ideas included being outdoors, being active, animals ...

Our children are very fortunate and have weekly forest school sessions, these are a great opportunity to be outside, work together, take time to yourself and try new things. Forest day is definitely one of the children's favourite days of the week!

Comic Relief

Where's Wally?

The children have now settled back in to the school routine. There has been lots of fun activities happening in the classes. Little foresters have been finding our about Alexander Graham Bell, Jays have been learning about the Great Fire of London and Eagles have been learning about the Vikings and microorganisms.

On Friday it was Comic relief. We wore red, had a tuck shop and Eagles made some Where's Wally photos for the other classes to try. Can you find Wally in the photo? He is wearing and red and white striped top.
