Blisland Primary Academy   St Priran's Day Celebrations.

Posted 05/03/2026
by Julie Pearce

Storytellers Nursery had a wonderful time celebrating St Piran's Day with a day full of Cornish-inspired activities. The children enjoyed making their own delicious scones, carefully mixing the ingredients and helping to prepare them ready for baking. There was great excitement as the scones came out of the oven, warm and smelling wonderful.

We also spent time exploring the beautiful daffodils that are beginning to appear around us. The children looked closely at their shapes, petals and bright colours before creating their own artwork. Using watercolours, they painted delicate yellow daffodils, experimenting with colour and brush strokes to capture what they had observed.

In the afternoon, we set up a very special afternoon tea, which the children absolutely loved. They carefully spread their scones with delicious Rodda's clotted cream, obviously Jam first, taking great pride in doing it themselves. There were lots of smiles as they enjoyed their tasty treats together around the table.

The children also had great fun pouring their own tea, practising their careful pouring and developing independence. Sitting together, chatting with friends and enjoying their homemade scones made the afternoon feel very special and a lovely way to celebrate St Piran's Day.

Brunel Primary and Nursery Academy   A week of fun and exploring!

Lantic Class have had a fantastic week of learning and fun!

In Literacy, we have been enjoying the story Poles Apart. The children have worked hard to make their writing more exciting by using adjectives and nouns. We described different characters and places from the story, thinking carefully about words that would help the reader imagine them. We came up with some brilliant descriptions and the children were very proud of their work.

In Maths, we have been learning about place value to 50. The children have been exploring tens and ones, building numbers and showing them in different ways. They used practical resources to help them understand how numbers are made, and everyone showed great determination when solving number challenges.

We also have some very exciting news! We have transformed our second classroom space into an area for continuous provision. The children were so excited to explore it and it already looks amazing. It has lots of opportunities for exploring, creating, building and learning through play, and we are looking forward to using it even more in the coming weeks.

To finish the week, we celebrated World Book Day. The children came to school dressed as a huge variety of wonderful characters. It was fantastic to see so many creative costumes and to celebrate our love of reading together.

Well done Lantic Class for a brilliant week of learning!

"Gool Peran Lowen!"

We have really enjoyed the sunshine this week in Tregantle Class! The garden has been full of imaginative and creative play, with the children making the most of the warm weather and spending lots of time outdoors. Our new stage area has been especially popular, inspiring plenty of performances and role play. This week we even had a yoga class led by the children themselves - what a wonderful and relaxing activity to see them organise and share with their friends!

Thursday was a very special day as we celebrated St Piran's Day. We were incredibly proud to perform our school anthem, Trelawny, live on Radio Cornwall. Tregantle children joined the whole school and sang their hearts out. It was such an honour to take part and celebrate this important Cornish occasion together.

World Book Day was also incredible. The costumes the children arrived in were imaginative and beautifully designed, and it was lovely to see so many favourite book characters come to life around the school. Throughout the day we enjoyed stories read by different teachers, made our own bookmarks, and went on an exciting 'character hunt' around the school grounds. What a fantastic way to celebrate our love of reading!

Celebrating St Piran's Day at School

Today, the pupils of Kensa and Nessa Class have immersed themselves in a joyful celebration of St Piran's Day, embracing the rich traditions, stories, and creativity that make Cornwall such a special place to call home. The classrooms have been filled with delicious smells, splashes of colour, and the sound of proud Cornish voices as the children explored their heritage in a range of hands on activities.

One of the highlights of the day has been pasty making, with pupils learning about the historic importance of this iconic Cornish food. Working together, they mixed, shaped, crimped, and filled their own traditional pasties, enjoying both the process and the chance to share something that has been part of Cornish identity for generations. Many pupils commented on how making pasties helped them feel connected to the families and communities who have carried on this tradition for hundreds of years.

In art, the children have been inspired by the dramatic Cornish landscape and its deep links to mining heritage. Pupils worked in mixed age groups to create beautiful watercolour paintings, helping one another with techniques and sharing ideas along the way. From engine houses silhouetted against stormy skies to rolling moorland and rugged coastlines, their work reflects both creativity and a shared pride in the place they live. The collaborative nature of the activity encouraged teamwork and showed just how much younger and older pupils can learn from one another.

Music also played a special role in the celebrations. The classes came together to sing the modern Cornish classic "Cornwall My Home", filling the hall with voices full of heartfelt enthusiasm. For many children, singing the song was a moment to reflect on what Cornwall means to them: its beauty, its history, and its strong sense of community.

To deepen the children's understanding of St Piran himself, Mrs Elliot led an engaging whole school assembly exploring the story of the patron saint of Cornwall. Pupils shared their thoughts about what it means to be Cornish and how traditions like St Piran's Day help keep their heritage alive. Many spoke with pride about their families, their local history, and the importance of celebrating who they are.

It has been a wonderful day of connection, creativity, and community-one that truly captured the spirit of Kernow.

Spring 2

Science
We are investigating States of Matter to find out how liquids, solids and gases behave when heated and cooled. The children have explored how the particles bond in each state of matter and are now exploring what happens when you cool liquids. They have prepared a range of liquids to compare and will carry out fair tests and observations over time to find out how and what changes occur.
Pictures of their experiments are on Showbie.
Writing
We have now completed our instruction and report writing, trialling story mapping as a planning tool. The children have enjoyed the combination of drawing and writing to plan their own versions and have overwhelmingly asked to use this approach again in their next piece of work.
Swimming
Lessons have started well, with enthusiasm and resilience plentiful. The intention is for the children to gain confidence and skills to allow them to fully enjoy the sailing and water sports in summer term.
Events
Next week, we have our Mother's Day assembly and in the following week some of the children will take part in a Bridge School Music event at St Martin's on Monday 16th and we will all travel to Truro for an Egyptian workshop at Cornwall Museum on Tuesday 17th.

Have a lovely weekend,
Mr T and Mrs W

Blisland Primary Academy   Chinese New Year celebrations.

Posted 02/03/2026
by Julie Pearce

.

At Storytellers, we have been loving diving into this term's topic, "Food Glorious Food", and what a fantastic way to explore it by celebrating the Chinese New Year!

We spent the week learning how the Chinese New Year is celebrated around the world and discovered that red is considered a lucky colour, symbolising happiness and good fortune. The children were fascinated to learn that this is the Year of the Horse, and we talked about what that means.

We explored different Chinese prints and patterns before having a go at painting our own names in Chinese-style writing - the children were so proud of their creations! Our creative table was full of colour as we made beautiful, bright dragons and enjoyed dancing around the room with them, just like in traditional dragon dances.

The children also had great fun mastering chopsticks, showing real determination and developing their fine motor skills as they practised picking up different foods. There were lots of smiles (and a few giggles!) as they improved their skills.

To finish our celebrations, we prepared a special banquet to share with our friends. The children showed such bravery and curiosity, trying different foods and tasting some delicious desserts. It was a wonderful way to explore new flavours, cultures and traditions together. What a joyful, colourful week of learning, exploring and celebrating!

Pelynt Primary Academy   Week Ending Friday 27th February 2026

by Joanna Rickard

Our first week back after half term has flown by and we can't quite believe that we are already in Spring Term 2!

We are very excited about our new enquiry question' 'What do we know about where we live?'  We will be discovering all about what makes Cornwall so special, from beaches, rockpools, sea creatures, pasties and even some tales of Pirates and Mermaids!  Alongside that we will look at some of our seasonal changes as we transition into Spring.  There is always so much to observe outside as we move into the warmer weather, and the children have already spotted lots of daffodils popping up around our garden area.  With some glimmers of sunshine this week we have enjoyed some long-awaited dry play and explore time in our outside area.

Our first week back has seen us enjoy the story 'Duffy's Lucky Escape'. This book was written by a local author, Ellie Jackson, and helped the children to understand why it is important to keep our beautiful Cornish beaches clean to help protect the sea life.

We had our own beach clean activity tray set up where the children have been finding all the rubbish that does not belong on the beach.

Alongside this the children have been serving lots of delicious ice-creams from our Beach Cafe role play area and creating some Ocean themed play doh scenes. We also made our own sand castle artwork with sand and glue, then sticking pictures of shells on to decorate them.

In music with Mrs Butlin this week we enjoyed exploring the Djembie African Drum, following along as Mrs Butlin changed the volume, tempo and rhythm that she played.

Our listening skills were also extended during our phonics as we explored symbols, the children did so well to correctly clap out one, two or three symbols depending on the words we gave them.

A very busy but enjoyable first week back.

A reminder that next Thursday 5th March is both St Piran's Day and World Book Day.  We are happy for the children to choose what celebration they would like to dress up for.

The Pre-School Team.

We had a brilliant first week back and made a fantastic start to our Spring 2 learning.

In English, we began the week by editing and publishing our poetry, taking great care with our presentation and improvements. Later in the week, we started our new unit on instructions, thinking carefully about clear steps, time conjunctions and bossy verbs. We are looking forward to developing these further next week.

There was lots of exciting new learning across the wider curriculum:

  • In Computing, we began our new programming unit.
  • In RE, we started learning about Good Friday.
  • In History, we had our exciting WOW start to introduce our new topic. Later in the week, we began learning about the Vikings.
  • In Science, we started our new topic on Changes to Materials and incestigated evaporating salty mixtures.
  • In French, we began learning about les saisons, and in Music, we started working on the well-known song, Blackbird.

We also enjoyed our first tennis session in PE, continued our sewing and fastenings unit in DT, and began our new PSHE unit, Healthy Me. As always, we celebrated fantastic effort and achievement in Friday's Achievers Assembly.

It was a focused and productive start to the half term - we are very proud of how well everyone settled back into their learning!

A Busy and Brilliant Week in Perranporth class!

In English, we continued our poetry unit. The children explored different poems, performed them, and wrote their own across the week. We were so impressed with their creativity and the ambitious language they used.

In Maths, we focused on multiplication and division, developing our number sense and building confidence with times tables.

Our wider curriculum was packed full of interesting learning:

  • In Geography, we completed our learning about deserts and created a double-page spread to showcase everything we had discovered.
  • In Science, we finished our electricity topic, again presenting our understanding in a detailed double-page spread.
  • In French, we learned about habitats, while in Music we continued with Classroom Jazz.
  • On Tuesday, we marked Safer Internet Day with special computing activities, including a live lesson.
  • In PSHE, we recognised Children's Mental Health Awareness Week and continued our learning about relationships.

There was plenty happening beyond the classroom too! We played dodgeball for our team match in PE, explored fastenings in DT, celebrated achievements in Friday's assembly, and enjoyed meeting many of you at Parents' Evening.

It was a full, fun and focused week of learning - we were very proud of all our superstars!

by Sarah Burton

This week in English, we started our new poetry unit. We are creating a sonnet about cats based on Shakespeare's Sonnet 18. The children have spent this week exploring the sonnet, finding out about the structure, researching Shakespeare and using archaic language, such as: thus, thee and thou.
This afternoon, the children used their story maps to learn the poem by heart and practise their oracy skills . I was proud of each group because they had to learn to pronounce words they had never seen before.

In maths, we have started a unit on ratio and proportion. Today we focused on scaling recipes up and down and they commented on what a useful life skill it was.

In History, we have been finding out about the census and looking at old extracts. We then had a go at creating a class census by interviewing each other and collecting data.

Please find the knowledge web for this half term below.

Have a fantastic weekend, Miss Burton.

Planting for the future

Welcome back!

The first week of term is already underway. Building on last year's Orwell Project, our Year 5 and 6 pupils, together with our Planet Protector group, visited the temperate rainforest just ten minutes from school to take part in a special tree-planting session. They were the very first group of pupils to plant trees as part of this exciting initiative, which will see more than 20,000 trees planted to help restore and regenerate the temperate rainforest. A fantastic start to the term and a wonderful way for our pupils to make a real difference to their local environment.

Parent Consultations We will be holding parent consultations the week commencing 9th March for Penhallow, Talland and Chaipel Classes and the week commencing 16th March for Landaviddy Class. Please see separate letter attached for dates and details of how to sign up.

Clubs will resume next week as follows: Monday: After School Running Club (Miss Bowden and Miss Bolton) for years 3-6. Tuesday: Lunchtime Construction Club (Mrs Lister) Reception/Y1/Y2; After school Girls' Football (Y3-6); Thursday: Lunchtime Choir Mrs Butlin (Y2-6) After school Art Club (Mrs Fitzsimmons) Reception/Y1/Y2 ; After school Football Club Mr Langley (Y3-Y6). We had hoped to restart Gardening Club this half term; however, unfortunately the greenhouse did not withstand the recent storms and we are currently awaiting a replacement. We are now aiming to have this popular club up and running again after the Easter break.

If your child would like to join any of the clubs available for their year group and has not already signed up, please let us know by email or telephone. Please note that once children have signed up to a club, they are expected to attend every week unless they are absent from school or we have received written parental permission for them not to attend. This applies to both lunchtime and after-school clubs.

World Book Day, Thursday 5th March 2026 Please find attached a £1 digital book token for your child to spend on a free book for World Book Day. Reminder that on World Book Day children should come in dressed as their favourite book character. We have already had some super entries for "decorate a paper plate" competition where the children are asked to decorate a paper plate following the theme or character of a book. Reminder that the deadline for entries is Monday 2nd March and winners will be announced on World Book Day (Thursday 5th March).

Have a great weekend.

Welcome back to everyone after the half term break. As ever, it has been a busy week, with lots of fantastic learning taking place across the school.

Design Technology
Class 3 are learning about mechanisms through model vehicles This week, they learnt to make a prototype model car to roll down an inclined plane. Children had to work in pairs to achieve their learning outcomes in the lesson and then test their car.

Art Exhibition
We hope all those who were able to join us for the art exhibition on Wednesday enjoyed viewing the children's work. It was great to see the variety of approaches on display.

Year 3/4 Football Tournament
Despite losing both games from the first round of matches this week, I thought the players were terrific. Many of the children were playing their first ever game and were very unsure what to do at the beginning. However, by the end, they had improved significantly.

Swimming
Year 1 and 2 children started their swimming programme this afternoon. With half of them assessed as non-swimmers, it shows the value of these lessons.

I look forward to sharing more of the children's learning next week.

In PSHE as part of our 'Dreams & Goals' topic we have been learning about how to work well with a partner and we had to work in pairs to design a welly boot. We have also been setting ourselves goals and thinking about how we can achieve them.

On Internet Safety day we read a story called 'Digiduck's Big Decision' all about being kind and making good choices on the internet.

We joined an online assembly that talked about places where we feel safe for Children's Mental Health week.

In PE we have been practising throwing and catching and learning how to find a space and communicate with our team in a game.

We made lovely Valentine's Day cards and some sweet cake treats on our last day before the half term holiday. We also had a lot of fun at the school disco!

We've had a lovely first week back. We began with launching our long-awaited enquiry into the impact of WW2 on the people of Britain. We completed a pre-assessment Kahoot quiz and then have spent this week investigating the events leading up to the start of the war and the significance of the Battle of Britain, listening to primary oral sources from the veterans of the RAF. It was so inspiring to hear of their dedication and spirit - as they never referred to themselves as brave: they were just doing their duty to King and country.

We are linking English with our enquiry, writing a balanced argument about whether Britain actually 'won' the Battle of Britain. We have investigated the 'pros' and 'cons' of the battle and took part in a class debate, putting our points of view across and building on and challenging the opinions of others.

In Maths, we have been finishing off our fractions, decimals and percentages unit. We are really confident now and are looking forward to a week of algebra next week!

We ended the week with a visit to Muchlarnick, where we were the first children to plant the first fifty trees which will make up the newly-formed temperate rainforest. This links in with the George Orwell project we were lucky to be part of a couple of years ago. We had 'press coverage' there and Aria, Nuala, Immy and Tristan spoke very eloquently when asked to give their account of their experience.

CONGRATULATIONS to our People of the Week: Lily, Chilali and Leo who demonstrated our school values and are true role models to their peers.

I have attached the Homework Grid and KIRFs for this half term. Carry on with the SATS books and remember the SATS clubs are Tuesday (pm), Wednesday (lunchtime) and Thursday (am).

That's all from us so have a lovely weekend,

Miss Randle and Mrs Clary.
