Reflection, Refraction and Climate

Eagles are now settled in to their routine. We are still enjoying our class book - The Nowhere Emporium and have enjoyed reading chapters set at different times and linking the two time lines together. Year 5 and 6 have now designed their own Wonders inspired by the book for their independent writing.

Year 6 have moved on to calculations in maths and year 5 are nearly at the end of their place value work. In science we have explored reflection and looked at the Incident ray and reflected ray. We also investigated refraction by looking at images in different ways through water.

In Geography we are developing our knowledge of North and South America by looking at the different climates and then focusing our attention on Mexico and what life is like there.

In RE children are considering the question of how religion helps people when life gets hard and have been looking at religious traditions around death and how these help people to grieve.

We were visited by EJ again over the last two weeks to support our PSHE work. We were focusing on sympathy and empathy.

Everyone should have received a list of spellings that cover the whole year, if you haven't got yours, please let us know.

Little Foresters   Week 2

by Lisa Harper

This week we loved our trip to Morwellham Quay. The children got to experience what it was like to be a child in Victorian times. We started off by going into the Victorian classroom and having a lesson. We had a go at writing on slate boards with slate pencils. Mrs Harper got in trouble for talking and had to stand at the front of the class with a wooden plank behind her arms to make her stand up straight. We then got to wear Victorian clothes and take a walk around the village. When we saw people in the village the girls had to curtsey and the boys had raise their hats and say 'Good day'. Our final activity was going into the mine on the mine train. We got to see the water wheel work within the mine.

Nowhere Emporium, light, place value and the Americas

Welcome back!

We have been busy in Eagles class over the last two weeks.

In the mornings year 5 and 6 have been working on place value up to 10 million. In literacy we are studying the Nowhere Emporium. We are rewriting the opening and using VIPERS skills to study some of the chapters. Year 4 join us at 12pm each day to hear the next chapter. We are focusing on handwriting this term and already we can see a difference!

In the afternoon year 4,5 and 6 have started their wider curriculum work.
On Mondays children are doing RE they are thinking about how religion helps people when life gets hard. On Tuesdays we do science and art. In science we are looking at light and this week looked at how light allows us to see. In art we looked at the South American arts Joaquin Torres Garcia to inspire a piece of art all about ourselves. On Wednesday children do PSHE - which this half term is about being me - French and forest school. On Thursdays children are focusing on hockey skills in PE, thinking about rhythm in music and networks in computing. Finally on Fridays we are doing geography where we have started to locate different countries in North and South America.

Remember PE kits need to be worn on Mondays and Thursdays.

There is a document below which summarises what we will be learning in each subject this term.

Welcome back - week 1

I hope you all had a lovely summer. The first week back flew by. The children enjoyed discovering the new things around the classroom and settled well into the classroom routines. Attached below is a document that shows what we will be learning in Little Foresters this half term. We will also be using seesaw in school for some of the childrens learning. Codes for this will be sent home over the next few days. You will be able to log into this with your child and see some of the work they have been doing in school.

Welcome back

It has been lovely to have everyone back in school. Everyone was looking very smart and ready to get back to work.

Our year 4 children have adjusted to their new morning and afternoon routine in different classrooms and it is working well. Year 2 have settled in to Jays class and the new reception pupils were eager to get started on their phonics lessons.

The most exciting change for this year is our new kitchen!! We now have our lunches cooked on site and we have created a new dining area so we don't have to eat in the classrooms. We will share some pictures soon of what the new set up looks like.

Lucky tickets are back for this year. When children are spotted demonstrating our 6 key values they earn a lucky ticker. We are looking for creativity, curiosity, excellence, enthusiasm, determination and responsibility.

We spent the weekend at the Lanlivery Rally to raise money and promote the school. It was lovely to chat to people and see some old faces. A huge thank you to our PTA volunteers for giving up some time at the weekend.

We are now looking forward to a productive week 2!!

Summer term

As always, the summer term is a busy one. The two big events are sports day and our summer performance.

The weather on sports day was not perfect but a bit of drizzle wasn't going to stop us!! The children showed great enthusiasm and sportsmanship. They competed in a range of races and relays. Carlyon were victorious on the day.

In the final week we held our annual summer performance. It is always a great evening for all our community to come together. The children put in a lot of work to perfect their lines, the singing and the dancing. The children also got involved to make the costumes, props and scenery to make the complete performance. Our fantastic PTA organised refreshments and a raffle and raised funds towards our garden project for next year. Thank you to everyone who came and bought tickets, raffles and refreshment. Also, thank you everyone who donated incredible raffle prizes!!!

We are also saying goodbye to our year 6. They have been amazing. We wish them the best of luck at Secondary school and know they will love all the opportunities and adventures it has to offer. We hope you leave Lanlivery with lots of love memories.

Where has this half term gone!

The last 7 weeks have disappeared! We have been finishing our learning across the curriculum. In history we marked the 75th anniversary of The Windrush by learning about the Caribbean and what life was like for people who travelled to work in Britain. In geography we have been comparing an urban life to a coastal life and considering advantages and disadvantages.

In computing, we were visited by Robert for a coding workshop, which was fantastic (see photos). We have continued our music lessons with Mrs Butlin and have tried flutes and drums as well as our Ukuleles.

In Literacy we have written poems that were sent to France as part of a project across the trust. The poems will be printed on to seed paper to be dropped in to fields.

In maths we have finished our last few units on money, measures and data.

Finally in PSHE we have been learning about ourselves and changes that happen as we move through puberty. Year 4 and 5 have been working with our mental health support assistant to learn all about decider skills.

We have also had sports day, sailing lessons, year 6 sleepover, whole school trip, preparations for our summer show, so a very busy few weeks!

SATS, Wheal Martyn and telling the time

Week 4 was SATS week. The year 6 threw themselves into the week with great enthusiasm. They had a hearty breakfast to get them started and then, when the clock started, were ready and focused to go. We are incredibly proud of how they tackled the SATS and they all put in 100%. Well done!!! Once we finished Friday's test we headed straight to Kidsworld to let off some steam and enjoy a slushie.

Whilst the year 6s were busy the year 4 and 5s joined Jays class. In maths they focused on telling them time. We joined back together in the afternoon to continue our wider curriculum work. We made mini water worlds to watch the water cycle in action. We finished our collages thinking about the shape and texture of materials and we started to look at cities around the world and use maps and atlases to locate them.

Week 5 started with a trip to Wheal Martyn to look at the history of China Clay in our local area. We went with Jays class who are learning about in history. Our class had missed a chance for this trip because of lockdown and thought we would take our chance to catch up!

Bodmin Airfield, Coronation preparations and Malfeasance

Week 2 started with a visit to Bodmin Airfied where we learnt all about the planes and even watched as they took off. We gathered lots of information to help us with our work.

In literacy we are now looking at poetry, we are using the poem Malfeasance to inspire us. Maths has been all about shapes and statistics in preparations for the year 6.

We have been continuing our science and planned an investigation to find the best bowl for a bird bath by comparing the rate the water would evaporate over time.

We are exploring the skill of collage in art and are using magazines to create images by considering colour, shape and texture.

We having also been preparing for coronation by baking, learning about King Charles and singing a coronation song in music.
